If you’re looking for a quintessential London experience, few things beat a riverside pub walk along the Thames. This route combines stunning views, rich history, and some of the city’s most characterful pubs. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this walk offers the perfect blend of sightseeing and relaxation. Today, we’ll explore four iconic stops: The Vault, The Horniman at Hays, The Mudlark, and The Old Thameside Inn.

Start at The Vault – A Hidden Gem Beneath Tower Bridge

Nestled under the arches of Tower Bridge, The Vault is a modern bar with a fascinating backstory. The space dates back to 1894,

when Tower Bridge was completed, but it wasn’t until 2006 that a City Freeman transformed it into a stylish drinking spot. Its low ceilings—just under five feet—reflect Victorian architectural norms, and the décor pays tribute to London’s past, featuring timelines of Tower Bridge’s construction and wartime imagery. Today, The Vault offers an intimate setting for cocktails and premium spirits, making it the perfect starting point for your walk.

The Horniman at Hays – Victorian Grandeur Meets Riverside Views

Continue east to Hay’s Galleria, once Hay’s Wharf, a bustling dock founded in 1651 and redeveloped in 1857 by Sir William Cubitt.

The Horniman at Hays occupies what was originally a Victorian tea warehouse owned by Frederick Horniman, a prominent tea trader whose name lives on in the Horniman Museum. The pub’s ornate interior celebrates this heritage, with restored friezes depicting Horniman’s global travels and original beams preserved from the 19th century. Managed by Nicholson’s since 1873, this pub has witnessed milestones from Tower Bridge’s construction to the London Olympics. Grab a riverside table and enjoy classic British fare while soaking in views of Tower Bridge.

The Mudlark – Echoes of Victorian London

Heading west toward Borough Market, you’ll find The Mudlark, a pub steeped in social history. Its name honors the mudlarks of Victorian London—impoverished children who scavenged

along the Thames for coal, metal, and other scraps to survive. Documented by Henry Mayhew in 1851, these mudlarks were a vivid part of London’s working-class life. Today, the pub offers a cozy retreat with wooden beams and traditional interiors, serving hearty dishes and real ales. It’s a fitting tribute to the resilience of those who once eked out a living on the riverbanks.

The Old Thameside Inn – Maritime Heritage on the Riverbank

Finally, make your way to The Old Thameside Inn, housed in a converted 16th-century spice warehouse on Pickfords Wharf.

Its location is steeped in history: just steps from the notorious Clink Prison, near the ruins of Winchester Palace, and adjacent to the replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship, the Golden Hinde, which circumnavigated the globe between 1577 and 1580. Inside, the pub retains its original flagged floors and timber beams, while outside, its riverside terrace offers panoramic views of the Thames. It’s the perfect spot to end your walk with a pint and a sense of London’s maritime past.

Tips for Your Riverside Pub Walk

🍻 Disclaimer: Sip Responsibly, Wander Wisely 🍻

While we celebrate London's legendary pubs and spirited history, we encourage all explorers to enjoy alcohol in moderation. Know your limits, hydrate like a hero, and never let a pint turn into a poor decision. Your liver doesn’t have a rewind button—and neither does your Uber rating.
